  • "Take control of your Web filter"

For a free Internet filter, K9 Web Blocker does its job well, providing a broad collection of options for customizing your remote Web supervision needs.

To run the program, you must register on the Web site to get the free activation code. The control panel is accessible only through the Internet. Uninstalling requires removing the app from the Task Manager, then using its password to delete it from the Windows Control Panel, and finally, rebooting. Because the password gets sent to the e-mail account of the person who registered the program, it's possible that an enterprising user could disable K9 on a shared computer.

Despite those drawbacks, K9 comes with a handful or so of predesigned filters and an option to customize. With more than 50 categories for organizing Web sites, and the keyword-free proprietary K9 rating system, the Web monitoring and blocking aspects of the software functioned well. K9 also has categories for blocking sites that have been detected as potential malware threats. Equally impressive, and a little bit scary, was the log that detailed not just blocked Web sites but also every Web site visited.

K9 Web Blocker is a good, free program for those who are concerned solely with Web surfing, but the lack of a chatware filter leaves some holes for predation.

"Reliable blocking, on-line black list, uninstall- and Task-manager protection!"

    by Shaker1978 on September 19, 2006

Pros: It uses a on-line black list, but you can add or exclude pages on your own. The blocking is very reliable without showing anything of the page-contents. you cannot remove the tool from memory with the task-manager and you cannot uninstall it without the master-password. Nice.

Cons: The license procedure is a bit annoying. Every PC needs its own (free) license key.

    "The best out there!"

by bwbrewster on April 21, 2006

Pros: I have tried other filtering software and they never fully blocked offensive content or blocked something that wasn't offensive. This one is by far the most effective and has many different catergories to block if you choose (that may not even be porn related).

Their website explains everything about it...

"Blue Coat Systems has been very successful selling a version of this software to Fortune 500 companies and other large corporations. When we became successful, and were looking for ways to give back to our communities, we realized that one valuable thing we could offer was a free version of our Web filtering service for home users."--k9webprotection.com.

If it was good enough for the Fortune 500 companies to monitor their employees, it definately works!

Cons: None yet (I don't think there will be).

"Did what it said on the tin"

by The Emmitt on April 19, 2006

Pros: Installed this for a friend and was pleasantly surprised. Previous reviewers did not seem so keen so I was a bit nervous.

Downloaded quickly across a dial up

The key was delivered wihtin minutes of my request and it took only a few seconds to install the program.

Tried searching against a gambling site and found it blocked with options to bypass the block, if you have the admin password.

Options to restrict surfing time available as well.

No sign on the closing of IE when a blocked site was visited, as mentioned by prvious reviewers.

    Cons: None so far

"SOMTHING AMAZING . MUCH MORE THAN JUST A CONTROL FILTER."

by the virus killer on October 6, 2006

Pros: this program can really save your pc from many things out there. it can save you from viruses , hackers , whatever you name it . really does block what you want it to block . once registard its great , i cant thank Blue Coat Systems enough For this product . IN GENERAL I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT FOR ANY INTERNET USER TRYING TO BLOCK SOMTHING.

Cons: for all you who dont like to give your email away it could be annoying in the beggining asking you for an email adress so that it can send you the key. the email may take a few minutes to reach. Also when searching for images the images may appar slower than usual due to the scaning and blocking of the filter. othor than that . GREAT PRODUCT WHICH I ONCE AGAIN HIGHLY RECCOMEND.
